THE region's budding young scientists will soon have the chance to exhibit their work at the University of Wollongong's Science Fair.

The event pulls together more than 200 high school students from throughout the Illawarra who have conducted experiments as part of their curriculum.

Although the fair will not open until Monday, October 29, organisers yesterday took part in the official launch, designed to spark interest and attract entrants.

The university's Dean of Science Professor Rob Whelan said the fair presented a unique opportunity for teenagers to immerse themselves in the world of science before considering it as a career path.

"It's good for the university and it's good for the students," Prof Whelan said.

"We're looking to encourage these young people as well as their teachers - and to reward them for taking an interest in science."

Illawarra Coal has again signed up as a major sponsor and company spokeswoman Roseanne Moore yesterday emphasised her company's commitment to educational opportunities for young people.

"We have been involved in the science fair since its inception and are proud to now play a significant role," she said.
